CVE-2026-50327 – Windows Media Remote Code Execution Vulnerability

CVSS 7.8 IMPORTANT Critical or Zero Day – Immediate Deployment

“A single weakness in media processing can turn a trusted system into an attacker’s foothold.”

A heap-based buffer overflow vulnerability in Windows Media allows an authorized attacker to execute code locally. Successful exploitation could enable arbitrary code execution with the privileges of the authenticated user, potentially allowing attackers to compromise sensitive data, disrupt operations, or establish persistence on affected systems.

CVSS Score: 7.8

SEVERITY: Critical

THREAT:
This vulnerability affects the Windows Media component and can be exploited by an attacker who already has low-level privileges on the target system. By leveraging the heap-based buffer overflow, the attacker may execute arbitrary code locally, potentially leading to further compromise of the affected device.

EXPLOITS:
The vulnerability was not publicly disclosed and was not being actively exploited at the time of publication. Microsoft rates exploitation as more likely. The CVSS v3.1 temporal metrics identify exploit code maturity as Unproven, and there is no confirmed public proof-of-concept exploit code.

TECHNICAL SUMMARY:
The vulnerability is caused by a heap-based buffer overflow (CWE-122) in Windows Media. Improper handling of memory can allow an authenticated attacker with low privileges to corrupt memory and execute arbitrary code locally. According to the CVSS v3.1 metrics, the attack requires a local attack vector, low attack complexity, low privileges, no user interaction, and has a high impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability.

EXPLOITABILITY:
Affected products include Windows 11 versions 24H2, 25H2, and 26H1, along with Windows Server 2025, including Server Core installations. Exploitation requires local access and low privileges on the affected system. No user interaction is required.

BUSINESS IMPACT:
An attacker who gains low-level access to a vulnerable system could use this vulnerability to execute malicious code, install malware, steal sensitive information, or establish a stronger foothold within the environment. Systems used in high-value or multi-user environments face increased risk if local access is obtained through other attack vectors.

WORKAROUND:
No mitigations or workarounds are available.

URGENCY:
This vulnerability should be prioritized because it is rated Critical and Microsoft assesses exploitation as more likely. Although local access and low privileges are required, successful exploitation enables code execution that could be used to facilitate broader compromise within an enterprise environment.
